Day 4 – Just When I Thought Things Couldn’t Get Worse
I woke up feeling marginally better but decided not repeat
the error of yesterday. She went to
breakfast and brought me a few morsels.
Then, her nursing duties done for the day, she left on the tour program.
Amazon’s first stop was palace that had been converted to a Sikh temple noted
to be one of the most sacred and important pilgrimage destinations in India for
the Sikhs. Guru Hari Krishna was a guest
of the palace in 1874. A large food hall
serves food 3 times a day to anyone who wants to eat the vegetarian meal. The chapatis look delicious but Amazon wanted
to see more sites.
Next stop was Humayun’s Tomb (1586) and the 72 meter high
Qutub Minar tower. In the past it was
possible to climb to the top but after individuals tried to bungee jump without
a bungee the tower was closed.
A city tour included a drive around the Parliament buildings
and a view of India Gate. It was not
possible due to preparation for Independence Day celebrations on January 28th. These preparations also include soldiers with
drums marching up and down the square, (Dave's words) near our hotel at 5 am. So much for getting over jet lag.
We drove to the lotus temple but upon seeing the line ups
stretching miles, Amazon opted to skip the temple. Our guide mentioned the line ups were so long
because it was free (Amazon had second thoughts). Of course. no tour would be possible without the
obligatory stop at the Indian carpet store.
Fortunately, Amazon had the excuse that the husband was not with her and
that he would shoot her if she bought a carpet.
Our guide then decided Amazon might want to do some clothes
shopping and a stop was made at a little shopping area with many lovely
stores. After the guide disappeared for
several minutes Amazon concluded that it was the the guide wanted to shop.
Next stop, the hotel to check on the patient who was not
feeling much better. When Amazon arrived, I was suffering from a developing case of "Montezuma's Revenge". A short while later, the illness opened a second front, with both of my fundamental orifices fully involved. My concern was that the Imodium I had already ingested had gone the wrong way. Amazon had other ideas and after a phone consult with a doctor Amazon hopped in a
cab and was taken to a pharmacy to buy more powerful drugs.
It is amazing how many drugs are available over the counter. Once the drugs were delivered to the patient, another dose of Imodium was administered. Amazon decided, with a pause in the action, it was time to visit the lounge for some nibbles, a glass of
wine and clean toilet facilities.
